Eating Healthy Means Eating Fresh

Everyone has their own idea about what eating healthy or eating ‘clean’ is, but most will agree that eating fresh and healthy foods, as opposed to over-processed and fast foods, make us feel good… even an hour later. The definition of ‘processed food’ is vague, because after all, even chopping and cooking are a process, but generally, when we refer to processed foods, these are conveniently packaged in boxes, cans, and bags. They need to be substantially processed, with additives, chemicals, and artificial flavors in order to be edible because they’re not found in nature.

The truth is, the further away from the farm your food goes, the more processed it becomes, the more the nutrients get washed away, and the less they are considered fresh and healthy foods. Heck, some of the foods we get in the grocery store are comprised mostly of ingredients that don’t come from nature at all!

Benefits of a Mediterranean Diet

Time and time again, the health benefits of a diet rich in fresh and healthy foods, with minimal to no processing, wins out in the long run. The Pita Jungle “Art of Eating Healthy” philosophy is based on tried and true Mediterranean diet principles. It’s mainly a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts, legumes, lean protein (mostly fish), unrefined grains, and cold-pressed, Mediterranean olive oil. Back in the early 1960s, a healthy food pyramid, based on a traditional Mediterranean diet was created. Why? Because the rates of chronic disease in countries along the Mediterranean were the lowest in the world, AND although these areas had limited medical services, their people had the highest life expectancies! So, who can argue with THAT?!

More modern food trends have led to more fatty meats, fewer fresh vegetables and foods, and more adulterated, convenience foods but, ironically, the food of our more modern and prosperous society has led to sky-high rates of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses.
