Eating the Mediterranean Way

Want to live to 100? There are areas along the Mediterranean Sea where people are said to live longer than those who live anywhere else in the world. Lifestyle has a lot to do with it, but it’s also been found that by following the Mediterranean diet, you can eat your way to becoming a centenarian. The Mediterranean diet isn’t a weight loss diet or restrictive portion plan (although many people do lose weight by this way of eating) – it’s a total lifestyle approach with an eating regimen consisting of certain foods, indigenous to that part of the world, that promote health and ward off all kinds of life-shortening diseases, most notably, heart disease.

What is the Mediterranean Diet?

The Mediterranean diet emphasizes eating primarily plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and whole grains. Plant protein comes first, then fish, and little red meat. In cooking, butter is replaced with healthy fats, mainly olive oil, and instead of salt, which is risky for your blood pressure and heart, meals are flavored with blends of herbs and spices.

As far as lifestyle goes, the first and foremost layer of the Mediterranean diet food and lifestyle pyramid, places an emphasis on exercise and sharing mealtime with family and/or friends, to foster a deep appreciation for the pleasures of eating nutritious and delicious foods and for a less stressed, more enjoyable life.
